Reverting an Anaerobic Oxidation Pond back to an Aerobic State
Published on February 24th, 2010 in BIEMS, Case Studies
A use case of BIEMS Bioremediation returning an Oxidation Pond in New Zealand back to an aerobic state.
Background
The pond was fed with Animal Waste Discharge, had become anaerobic and was giving off obnoxious odours as far as 5km away. They were faced with local government penalties and a strict timeframe to address the problem. If a solution was not found they faced closure.
What BIEMS did
The surface area of the pond was 4000 sq metres and the application of BIEMS was made by spraying the surface of the pond with 10 litres of BIEMS mixed with 100 litres warm water. It was sprayed with a conventional agricultural spray system, which had the capability to reach the middle of the pond, mounted on the back of a tractor. This was a once only application.
Outcomes
The state of the pond was reversed from an Anaerobic State to an Aerobic State and within 36 hours of treatment, the offensive odour was eliminated. Once the pond was back in balance further treatments were not required.
